Choosing the Right Dance School for Your Child

With so many options out there, choosing the right dance school for your child can feel a bit overwhelming. It might be tempting to go for the cheapest class or the one closest to home, but there are a few really important things to look out for when picking a place that’s safe, supportive, and professional.

Here are some things to consider and questions to ask:

Are the teachers qualified? Not all dance teachers are officially trained. Ask what qualifications they hold and if they take part in continued professional development (CPD). Good teachers keep learning, just like their students.

Is safeguarding taken seriously? A reputable school should have clear safeguarding policies in place. Ask if staff have completed safeguarding and first aid training, and check if the school has the correct insurance and risk assessments in place.

Are they licensed for performances? For shows involving children, schools need to apply for licenses or BOPAs (Body of Persons Approval) and make sure there are enough licensed chaperones. Ask how they manage this.

Do they follow a recognised syllabus? Structured training matters. Ask if they teach a recognised dance syllabus (like ISTD, RAD, etc.) and if students have the option to take exams, even if it's not mandatory.

What’s the class size and atmosphere like? Small class sizes mean more attention for your child. You want an environment that’s friendly, encouraging, and inclusive.

How do they communicate with parents? Is communication clear and consistent? Do they keep you in the loop with important dates and updates? Look for a school that values open, respectful communication.

Is it about more than just trophies? While competitions can be great, a school should also focus on developing confidence, creativity, discipline, and teamwork – not just winning.

Choosing the right dance school isn’t just about dance. It’s about finding a place where your child feels safe, supported, and inspired to grow. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and trust your instincts. A good school will be happy to talk you through it all.

Your child deserves the best start in their dance journey – and you deserve peace of mind knowing they’re in safe hands.
